Malden Fire Chief Bill Sullivan Retires

Sullivan has served in the Malden Fire Department for 36 years.

MALDEN, MA – Malden Fire Chief Bill Sullivan has announced his retirement, city officials said Thursday.

Sullivan's retirement goes into effect April 1, Administrative Assistant Toni Finn confirmed to Patch over email.

Sullivan has served the Malden Fire Department for 36 years. He grew up in Malden and followed in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, who served in the fire department from 1963 to 1995, and from 1917 to 1957.

Sullivan joined the Malden Fire Department in 1987 and moved up the ranks to become lieutenant, captain, deputy chief, and eventually fire chief in 2020.

After retiring, Sullivan plans to spend time relaxing with his family, according to the announcement.

“Bill has done an excellent job and I want to thank him for his dedicated service to our City, not only as Chief of the Department but throughout his entire career,” Mayor Gary Christenson said in the announcement.

Stephen J. Froio, who is currently Fire Lieutenant, will become the Chief of Department on April 2, Finn wrote in an email.
