Malden Third Grader Receives Pioneer Award

Easter Seals presented Damian Milton of Malden with its 2015 Richard A. LaPierre Pioneer Award on Monday, Oct. 5, at a reception at Embassy Suites in Waltham. Easter Seals services empower people with disabilities to reach their full potential.

Damian, a third grader at Linden STEAM Academy in Malden, has cerebral palsy and is unable to perform precise movements or speak. It’s also difficult for this 10-year-old to gain weight because of the exertion from his constantly moving limbs.Easter Seals physical therapists have been working closely with Damian and his team at school to increase his mobility and access to the environment.

“There have been times over the years when Damian has really struggled,” said Jessica Milton. “We’re impressed that he was chosen for this award out of all the kids with disabilities that Easter Seals serves in Massachusetts. It also makes Damian feel proud of himself. It’s great for him to be acknowledged because he works so hard.”

In the process, this very determined boy has been making significant progress. His parents, Jessica and John Milton, hope that one day he’ll be strong enough to walk.The Pioneer Award is given annually to a boy or girl with disabilities in Massachusetts who demonstrates the pioneering spirit of former Easter Seals President Richard A. LaPierre.

“Pioneers are not afraid to try new things – even when they’re hard – and they don’t give up,” Easter Seals President Paul Medeiros said. “Even at his young age, Damian embodies that spirit of resilience and triumph.”
