Pickleball is a fast-paced and highly accessible racquet sport that has grown in popularity in recent years, especially among older adults. The Department of Recreation said it has long promoted the sport, previously offering indoor pickleball programs.
According to Malden officials, funding for the courts has come from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) via the Recreation category of funds. This category of funding was designed to encourage people to pursue more outdoor activities.

City officials said Mayor Gary Christenson, the Recreation Subcommittee on ARPA Funding, Councilor Jadeane Sica, Recreation Coordinator Joe Levine and resident Donna Lombardi were among those who worked together to ensure funding was allocated for the new courts.
"I'm excited to see our residents get out and use these courts. We really want to see them used as much as possible," Levine said.
