Malden's Public Health Nurse Named to Medical Advisory Committee

Maria Tamagna, R.N., Public Health Nurse for the City of Malden, was recently appointed to a three-year term on the Medical Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Tuberculosis.

TB is a disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal. TB disease was once the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The medical committee provides guidance regarding the elimination of tuberculosis to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Bureau of Infectious Disease Tuberculosis Program.

Medical Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Tuberculosis makes recommendations regarding policies, strategies, objectives and priorities and reviews the extent to which progress has been made toward eliminating tuberculosis in the State of Massachusetts.
