MALDEN, MA - High school students, educators, city and school officials recently got a lesson in the district’s new app.

The Malden Public Schools recently introduced Google for Education app to students and educators at the high school. Google for Education is a cloud-based productivity program that is intended to help teachers and students connect and get work done from any computer, tablet or smartphone.

The initiative will assist the district in meeting 21st century learning goals, according to school officials. Google for Education is a free app.

About a year ago, Malden High School was chosen by Sprint to be apart of the 1:1 initiative to help students connect to the internet at a reduced cost by providing them with Chromebooks, according to Malden Blue and Gold. Last year, the school carried out a pilot program for the initiative, where every member of the Class of 2018 was given a Chromebook.

English Teachers Sean Walsh and Natalia Brennan pitched the idea to Softbank and Sprint in June 2014 that Malden High should be one of the schools that are a part of this program, according to Malden Blue and Gold. Brennan and Walsh now serve as One-to-One Coordinators.

Today, more than 1,500 students at Malden High School have Chromebooks for daily and at-home use.

Malden High School received 2,200 Google Chromebooks, upgrades to their network infrastructure, and professional development around tech integration as part of the ConnectEd Program and through a generous gift from Sprint/Softbank, according to city officials.

Students from the School Help Desk were also part of the presentation. The help desk focuses on repairs and device management.
