MALDEN, MA — A proposal will go before the Malden Planning Board later this month to allow a large warehouse to be built on the Malden-Melrose line. Pugh Management, on behalf of property owner Motel Realty Company, is seeking a special permit to allow warehouse use and wholesale and distribution use of property in the Highway Business zoning district.

The plan calls for tearing down the Town Line Inn at 735 Broadway, as well as a nearby car dealer and restaurant, and building a 94,000-square-foot warehouse. The building would have 107 car parking stalls – 60 in Malden and 47 in Melrose, 16 trailer parking stalls, seven box truck parking stalls and one drive-in door.

The city of Melrose is taking the lead on the project, as the bulk of the building will be located within its borders. In June, the Melrose Board of Appeals granted the developer variances from the zoning ordinances for building height, open space and driveway width.

While 118,000 square feet of the 218,000-square-foot property is located in Malden, the majority of that is open space, according to documents from the city of Melrose.

The Malden Planning Board will hold a public hearing about the proposal Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.
