10 Tips to Keep Holiday Guests Connected to Your Home Wifi Network

With holidays gatherings, your home wifi network may see more use than ever. Here are some tips to keep everyone connected.

Holiday guests may show up this year with all sorts of electronic devices in hand, looking to connect to your home’s wifi network. Here are some tips from Comcast to make sure you have the strongest home wifi network for your holiday guests.

  1. Don’t put the router on the floor and make sure it is off the ground at least 5-7 feet, if possible.
  2. Put the router in the center of the home, preferably on the first floor. Avoid remote corners of the house and the basement.
  3. Don’t put the router near a window, half the signal will go out the window.
  4. Avoid putting the router next to or behind the TV because media components can seriously affect the wireless performance. Also, stay away from enclosed consoles with heat producing appliances like a DVD player or game console.
  5. Stay clear of basic home appliances like cordless phones and microwaves.
  6. Don’t hide the router and instead set it up out in the open, not tucked in a cabinet.
  7. Keep the router away from fish tanks, since wireless signals don’t pass well through water.
  8. Figure out where in your house the wireless network is used most often and put the router within a clean line of site to that area.
  9. Limit applications that hog your speed, including games and video chats. It can make the wireless experience slower for everyone else.
  10. Regularly reboot your router to get software updates that require a restart just like any other consumer device.
