The MCCPS Competes In Quiz Bowl

The MCCPS team had an outstanding day at the Malden Catholic High School’s 18th Annual Quiz Bowl on Saturday, January 29, 2011.

This Quiz Bowl provides a forum where area middle school students come together to participate in a friendly academic competition. This year there were over 200 students competing for the title. The contestants, in teams of five, took part in timed question and answer rounds, participating both individually and collectively as a team.

Questions were drawn from the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks on the topics of Life Science, Weights and Measurements, Literature, Theatre, Massachusetts towns and
cities, Greek and Roman Civilization. Each correct question was worth ten points and each incorrect answer had five points deducted.

The MCCPS team was comprised of eighth grader, Althea Lutwak, and seventh graders, Adam Linsky, Fiachra Daly, Olivia Comeau, and Audrey Buczko. Althea served as the team spokesperson and their moderator/coach was Kay O’Dwyer.

These students demonstrated outstanding teamwork and won each of the preliminary/classroom rounds. Next was the Championship Round in the Auditorium where each member was responsible for a particular category. The categories were an interesting
mix which included the 50th Anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s Inauguration, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, the 50th Anniversary of the Flintstones, Sir Isaac Newton, and Texting Abbreviations. Both Fiachra Daly and Olivia Comeau both earned a perfect score in
their categories.

Then, teams, coaches, and parents waited anxiously for the final scores to be announced determining who would advance to the Championship Round. With excitement and just some nerves, the MCCPS team took their seats on stage to compete against Winthrop Middle and St. Agnes for the title. There were a total of fifty
questions and each contestant had his/her own buzzer; no conferring or team questions in this final round. After an intense round of competition, MCCPS emerged the clear victors of the Malden Catholic High School Quiz Bowl 2011. Hard work, dedication, and teamwork were truly evident in their accomplishment. With great pride they accepted the Quiz Bowl trophy which is now on display in the foyer of school.
