Overnight Barge Fire Cancels Marblehead July 4 Fireworks

Organizers said the state fire marshal ordered the fireworks and harbor illumination canceled after the fire early Thursday morning.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — The Marblehead fireworks and harbor illumination is canceled for the second straight year after a fire on one of the barges stationed in the harbor overnight.

Organizers said the state fire marshal "won't allow our vendor to perform any fireworks until (a) determination of how the barge was able to catch fire (is made)."

"This is an ongoing development and we will post updates as soon as we know more," organizers said.

Last year's fireworks were canceled because of fog.

North Shore residents looking for fireworks shows on Thursday can catch them in Salem at Derby Wharf or at West Beach in Beverly (which is a ticketed event).
