5 Things You Need to Know Today: Sept. 15
Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Today is expected to be mostly-sunny by the National Weather Service, and there is a chance of rain with a high of 75 degrees.
2. Mayara Jordani of Marlborough, has been named a peer advisor for the 2011-2012 academic year at Western New England University in Springfield. Jordani is a sophomore majoring in criminal justice at the University. Peer Advisors are a highly select and comprehensively trained team of students who seek to assist in the university transition. Congratulations, Mayara!
3. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) reminds homeowners who heat with oil of a new requirement under the Massachusetts Homeowner Heating Safety Law. The law mandates that all oil-burning heating systems either have an oil-safety valve or a protective sleeve on the oil supply line if the oil supply line is in contact with concrete, the earth, or other floor surfaces (see attached diagram). The measure also gives homeowners the ability to voluntarily purchase oil leak insurance coverage. The deadline for homeowners to bring their heating oil systems into compliance with the leak prevention requirements is September 30, 2011. See the full release here.

4. Consign My Closet will be hosting their annual sale in Marlborough this year at . This large consignment sale gives people an opportunity to sell their clothing and various other items at a major event. The sale will be held Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. 5. Do your kids love science experiments? If so, send them down to the this afternoon for "Mad Science" with Debby. Give them a call beforehand, however, as registration is required and the group is limited to 16 participants.
