The Tuesday afternoon fire burned a wooded area near homes south of downtown Marlborough.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — Marlborough firefighters put out a brush fire Tuesday during a heightened fire alert in Massachusetts.
The fire broke out in a wooded area near the corner of Liberty and South streets, just south of Ward Park and the downtown area. The fire burned across about a 1/2 acre and did come close to some homes, the department reported.
A red flag warning is in effect in Massachusetts through Tuesday night due to weather favorable to brush fires, including gusty winds, dry ground and low humidity.
