MARLBOROUGH, MA — More than a year after plans for a 276-unit mixed-use building in the French Hill neighborhood were revealed, work is now underway.

The developer behind the Alta Marlborough building broke ground on the project Monday, the Marlborough Economic Development Corp. said.

"Alta Marlborough will include a 276-apartment complex with 10,074 square feet of retail space and a parking garage at the intersection of Lincoln and Mechanic Streets right outside of downtown Marlborough," MEDC said in a social media post. "The project will also improve access to the head of the Assabet River Rail Trail including a new public parking lot and bathroom facilities that give a nod to the old train station."

Wood Partners submitted plans for the building in April 2022, leading to a months-long approval process in front of city council. Wood Partners is behind several other "Alta" branded developments across the region, including Alta Framingham, Alta on the Row in Worcester and Alta Oxbow in Wayland.

Alta Marlborough will feature multiple buildings of varying heights, and 10 percent of apartments in the development will be set aside as affordable. The developer is also planning to build a 22-space parking lot and restroom facility where the Assabet River Rail Trail ends near Highland Street. The facility would be transferred to city ownership once complete, according to plans.
