Gruesome Marlborough Machete Attack: Jury Finds Hernandez Guilty
The victim nearly lost his arm in the attack inside a Broad Street home. The two men were arguing over soccer, authorities have said.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — A Marlborough man could spend up to five years in state prison after he was found guilty this week of committing a gruesome machete attack that stemmed from an argument over a soccer game.
Abel Hernandez, 41, was found guilty this week of one count of threatening to commit a crime and one count of mayhem after a four-day jury trial, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
According to authorities, Hernandez attacked another man on July 9 inside a Broad Street home.

"Hernandez brandished a machete and swung it at the victim, striking the victim’s forearm, while yelling 'I’m going to kill you,'" Ryan said in a news release. "The victim suffered a significant injury, with his arm almost being completely severed."
Marlborough police arrested Hernandez near the intersection of Church and Hildreth streets.

Hernandez had claimed he was not the attacker, and had been at a restaurant drinking at the time of the attack. But the restaurant he claimed to have been at was neither open on the day of the attack nor does it serve alcohol.
Middlesex Superior Court Judge Catherine Ham sentenced Hernandez to up to five years in state prison for the mayhem charge, plus three years of probation.
