Pair Living In Closed Marlborough Funeral Home Arrested

The former Rowe's funeral home is slated for development, but has been closed for years.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — Marlborough police this week arrested two men found living inside the former Rowe Funeral Home, the site of a proposed mixed-use residential development.

Police responded to the 57 Main St. building just after 7 a.m. Wednesday after a hangup 911 call. While walking around the property, officers noticed an open window. Police found the men inside the building, and said they "caused a significant amount of damage" during their long stay.

The 35-year-old and 22-year-old men were both arrested on charges of breaking and entering and vandalizing property. Both men had addresses in Marlborough at apartments along Broad Street and East Main Street, according to police records.

The Rowe Funeral Home has been closed for years. Boston-based JW Capital first proposed a 99-unit apartment building on the site in October 2022. But a fight with city councilors over parking related to the project led to a lawsuit, which was only recently settled.
