Cape Cod Police Save Despondent Man At Bridge

YARMOUTH, MA — Cape Cod police officers on Wednesday rescued a despondent man at a bridge, according to authorities. The incident happened in Yarmouth at the base of the Bass River Bridge near the Dennis border.

"Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Jeffrey Rivett arrived and observed a man standing at the edge of the parking area next to the sea wall with a piece of rope around his neck," Yarmouth police said in a statement. "The man was near the very edge of the sea wall threatening to jump. Patrol Officer Justin Haire arrived and both Officers were eventually able to convince the man to remove the rope from around his neck and step further away from the edge."

The 30-year-old man was hospitalized for treatment.

"This can be a very emotional time of year," Yarmouth police said in a statement. "If you or a loved one needs help, call The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands at 1-800-893-9900."

The Samaritans added this:
