Freetown Voters Come Out Against Wampanoag Casino

Voters in Freetown decisively reject proposed tribal casino

In a special town vote in the town of Freetown Tuesday night, voters rejected the plans for a proposed Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) casino. According to the Boston Globe, the vote failed by 954-to-308. About 22 percent of registered voters participated.

Last week, the tribe announced a , hotel, retail space and parking on land along Route 140 that borders Freetown and Lakeville. Tuesday’s non-binding referendum was intended to gauge voter opinion. The town of Lakeville will hold a similar vote on June 2nd.

Preserving the quiet character of the town, reservations about the location and lack of information were reasons voters gave for voting against the casino.
