Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Homes has announced the death on Dec. 31, 2013 of John J. Varkonda, 55, of Edgartown, whose visitation will be held Jan. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Edgartown Road in Oak Bluffs.
Updated Jan. 4: According to the Vineyard Gazette, Varkonda had been superintendent of the Island's state forest from age 29 until his unexpected death from an aortic aneurysm.
