Accomplishment:

Amoy Anderson, a senior at MVRHS and co-founder of the Martha's Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative (MVYLI), was recently chosen as Student of the Month.  Amoy says she was surprised by the news, but after learning about her achievements, we think it's not so surprising at all. "It is a real honor," Amoy said about being named Student of the Month.

Students are chosen for the award based on their grades and what they have done for their community. In addition to her work with MVYLI, Amoy is on the honor roll, was recently nominated for National Honors Society, plays tennis and runs track. She also volunteers for the hospital and Island Grown Schools and participates in the high school's Young Sister Program.

Key to Awesomeness:

The Young Sister Program helped Amoy to see herself as a leader, but it was moving to the Island from Jamaica that really shaped her path. "In Jamaica I didn’t have the opportunity to do so many things. Now that I live on the Vineyard, I can volunteer and help out the people in my community," she said. Amoy is off to either Suffolk or Simmons University in the fall and plans to study pre-med. We know her Student of the Month designation is only the beginning; she'll earn many more well-deserved accolades along the way.
