POLL: Should There Be a Size Limit on Houses?
How big is too big? Tell us what you think.
Last week there was a commission land use planning committee meeting where changes to the DRI checklist were discussed. The DRI checklist determines which projects should be sent to the for review as developments of regional impact.
On the list was a request by the West Tisbury Planning board and the to consider adding the construction of very large houses to that checklist.
The request brought up the very sensitive issue of conservation versus economic development. Many Islanders depend on the construction industry for year round employment and believe such regulations could harm business. Others believe that the very character of the Island is in danger of being destroyed by these “trophy homes” and also site the damage such homes do to the delicate natural environment of the Island.
