Second Gun Missing In Martha's Vineyard

An Edgartown woman is facing gun charges after waiting 10 days to report an unauthorized firearm as missing.

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, MA — A 65-year-old woman from Edgartown's license to carry has been suspended and is now facing gun charges after she waited ten days to report a lost gun.

This is the second gun to go missing on the island, following an incident at the Tisbury Police Department where a gun was reported missing in 2017 and still hasn't been found.

Catherine Tobin, 65, reported the gun missing on July 15. According to a police report, she told police she lost the firearm sometime between a visit to the Black Dog Cafe in Tisbury and helping a friend move in Edgartown on July 5.

When asked why it took her so long to report the gun missing, Tobin told police that "her life had been very busy and she finally decided to report the gun lost on the advice of her brother,” in the police report.

She did tell police that she last remembered having the gun on her side in a black Kydex holder at the cafe because she remembered it being 'uncomfortable' to the point where it left a rash. She told police she believed she removed it but has no idea where the firearm went from there.

According to the report, Tobin has a Florida license. When told her license was suspended and she needed to bring the gun to the station, Tobin said she was “currently in West Tisbury and would get [there] eventually," according to a report from the Martha's Vineyard Times.

When an attorney called Tobin to arrange to turn in her license and a gun, Tobin told police she was, "prepared to report it stolen."

The missing gun was reported and put into the national database while local police departments were notified.

Police say they have searched for the gun, but haven't been able to recover it.

No one has been charged in the missing Tisbury Police Department's gun disappearance.

Tobin will report to Edgartown District Court on the charge of failing to report the gun missing.
