EDGARTOWN, MA — Beaches on Martha's Vineyard sustained some heavy erosion damage during the island's brush with Tropical Storm Isaias Tuesday night despite the eye of the storm passing hundreds of miles to the west of the island.

"Tropical Storm Isaias left us with a mess," said the Trustees in an evaluation posted midday on Wednesday.

The storm's winds carved off a large section of Wasque Point and washed the over-sand vehicle trail out to sea.

Norton Point was also damaged with most of the south-facing beach overwashed, and the interior trails flooded. The oceanfront OSV trail was also sliced away in several sections.

The Trustees said the area with be reevaluated at low tide later Wednesday and Thursday, but that rangers likely won't get a chance to work on restoring the beach until later on Thursday.
