UPS 'Missed The Boat' To Nantucket — Concern For Packages Ahead

Nantucket shops and residents are in for a challenging summer after UPS failed to make ferry reservations for its trucks.

Most packages arrive on the island via Steamship Authority, so missing out on their bulk reservations will put most packages at risk.

NANTUCKET, MA — There's some apprehension aboard for Nantucket shops and residents after UPS, the shipping and receiving giant, did not secure its normal boat reservations aboard the Steamship Authority ferries for the upcoming summer season, the Nantucket Current confirmed.

UPS missed the priority window they usually make to set aside bulk reservations for the summer, and it wasn't until the Steamship Authority warned UPS they were in danger of losing - or have already lost their reservations that someone noticed, the Current reported.

"We're screwed," one UPS driver told the Current on Monday at the company's facility off Old South Road. The driver said there were no UPS supervisors on the island to comment specifically about the situation. "Corporate has to figure this out," they were reported saying.

UPS might have to make reservations on late boats and times outside of its normal schedule, which will most likely present challenges to the workforce, Rob Ranney, Nantucket's representative on the Steamship Authority Board of Governors told the Current.

The Steamship Authority's communication director said he couldn't specifically comment on the situation with UPS, but said the boat line will work to fix logistical issues with "critical service providers to the island" who rely on the Steamship.
