What is Vineyard Style?

This column usually features tough issues facing Islanders with a call for suggestions, advice and comments. However, today we decided to make our topic a little less serious. In honor of the first annual Martha’s Vineyard Fashion week, we have a different type of question for you.

One look at a room full of Islanders, and you can tell that - though we may show up to Cronigs in our pajamas sometimes - we still care about fashion. In fact, the lack of mainstream chain store clothing stores on the Island means that we rarely look like a Gap advertisement.

Tonight at the Fashion Show Benefit at the Sandbar & Grill, great styles from local boutiques , , and and new looks from Island designers such as Noava Knight, Ashley Chase and Karen Russillo will be walking the runway.

We decided to ask the participating stores what items of clothing define what they would call “Vineyard Style” and we want to hear the same from you.

According to the Green Room, Vineyard Style is a “great pair of boots, a fabulous cashmere sweater add in there a great pair of jeans and you’re good to go.” For those at Citrine, Vineyard Style is “legwarmers and live-in and out boots and sweaters.” B*Tru says “it’s an oversized, Aztec-inspired sweater coat” and at Vineyard Vines, “other than a whale hat, it’s our silk ties that are made in the USA.”
