Why Is Martha's Vineyard Better Than Nantucket?

It's Island Cup day so we asked and got some answers!

It has been a really long time since the one and only time I visited Nantucket myself, so I had to do a little research on us vs. them.

I know why Vineyarders (can’t really say Islanders here) love the Vineyard, but why is there such a permeating belief that our Island is better than their Island? Even I, who have only been to Nantucket once, admit to feeling this way – and I know plenty of others, who’ve never ever been to Nantucket, who share this belief.

As far as I can tell, popular local (meaning on Martha’s Vineyard) consensus is that this topic isn’t even up for discussion; Martha’s Vineyard is just better.

A little digging around in history books will tell you that the origin of our Islands is very similar. Both Islands were originally inhabited by Wampanoag and in 1641, both Islands were deeded to Thomas Mayhew. However, since Nantucket had such poor soil, Mayhew used Nantucket, and it’s original inhabitants, to raise sheep for the folks living on Martha’s Vineyard. Since the late 1800s, both Islands have relied primarily on summer tourism to keep their economies alive.

I can only assume, that Nantucketers (not sure they call themselves that) feel the very same about their own Island, but since I asked, I figured I should pass along some of the reasons why Vineyarders believe Martha’s Vineyard is better than Nantucket:
