Decorated Medford Firefighter Retires After 33 Years
Lt. Stephen McAveeney was awarded the Warren W. Thompson Medal for his actions at a multi-alarm fire in Medford Square in 1991.

MEDFORD, MA — A decorated Medford firefighter retired Aug. 1 after 33 years with the Medford Fire Department. Lt. Stephen McAveeney joined the department in 1987 and was promoted to lieutenant in 2013.
Throughout his three decades of service, he served on Engine 2, Engine 3, Engine 5, Engine 6, Ladder 2, the ERU and Fire Prevention. He received the Warren W. Thompson Medal in 1991 for his actions at a multiple alarm fire in Medford Square and a commendation in 2009 while assisting at a motorcycle accident on Mystic Valley Parkway.
"Steve has served the department well, and we wish him a long, healthy, and happy retirement," the firefighters' union said in a statement.
