CAMBRIDGE, MA — The police department and Middlesex District Attorney’s office announced that an arrest has been made in connection to a fatal stabbing that took place inside of a residential building on Norfolk Street Tuesday night.

Police responded to the scene just before 8 p.m. after dispatchers received a report that someone had been stabbed. Upon arrival, police, fire, and EMS workers found one male suffering from serious injuries and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Victor Rivas, 51, was arrested on Wednesday on the charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon resulting in serious bodily injury. The South Boston resident is scheduled to be arraigned in Cambridge District Court on Friday, Jan. 9. Rivas was reportedly found near the scene and apprehended by Cambridge officers with the assistance of MIT police.

According to Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow, her department’s preliminary investigation suggests the suspect and victim, who knew each other personally, got into an altercation inside the apartment building. Rivas also sustained minor injuries from the incident. Police said the investigation also suggests that the stabbing was an isolated incident and that there is no broader danger to the public.

While an arrest has been made, the investigation remains ongoing by both Cambridge police and the DA's office.
