Efforts to Save Post Office; Medford Honors Local Heroes
Here's five things. Monday, Oct. 10, 2011.
Good morning, here's five things to know today:
It's Columbus Day: No school and - for some - no work today. Check out this brief history of the holiday from TIME magazine.
Marie Rizzo remembers West Medford's old five and dime. And the A & P. And the bakery that was across the street from it. But those places are all memories now. She doesn't want the West Medford Post Office to join them as things of the past. Rizzo, a resident of West Medford for over 60 years, has distributed petitions asking the Post Office Inspector General to keep the branch open. By her tally, she's collected over 2,000 signatures so far.

Saturday morning the city honored six brothers born and raised in Medford in a dedication ceremony at the corner of Bow Street and Shapely Avenue. The Maietta brothers William, Horace, Anthony, Saverio, Joseph, and Richard all served in the military. Richard served in Korea and the others all served in World War II.
Another Nice Day: It's going to be sunny with highs around 80 degrees again today, according to the National Weather Service. It's expected to cool down to the upper-60s tomorrow.
