Ex-Bruin Bates to Coach Medford High Boys Hockey

School turns to its all-time leading scorer to turn around its fortunes.

The Medford High School boys hockey program has turned to a prolific alum as its new coach.

Boston.com reported Shawn Bates, who played in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders, has been hired as the new head coach of the Mustangs.

According to the website, Bates graduated from Medford in 1993 and is the school's all-time leading scorer with 103 goals and 139 assists. Bates played college hockey at Boston University, winning the national title in 1995.

Bates was drafted in the fourth round of the 1993 NHL Draft by the Bruins and made his debut in the 1997-1998 season, according to his Hockey-Reference.com page. After four seasons in black and gold, Bates signed with the Islanders, where he played through the 2007-2008 season.

He finished his career with 72 goals and 126 assists in 465 games in the NHL.

Bates is perhaps best remembered for this penalty shot goal in the 2002 Stanley Cup playoffs while playing for the Islanders against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Boston.com reported Bates is responsible for two MHS scholarships and donated the scoreboard at LoConte Rink. Last season the Mustangs went 8-12.
