Medford Adopts Phased-In Hybrid Model For School Year

The School Committee approved a plan Thursday that staggers the return to school for students based on grade level.

MEDFORD, MA — The School Committee on Thursday approved a phased-in hybrid model to start the school year. Students will begin the year remote, and the start of hybrid instruction for students will be staggered throughout the fall based on grade level. The plan is subject to approval from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and bargaining with the teachers' union.

The phased-in model is as follows:

Phase 1: Aug. 31-Sept. 15

  • Staff only - prep and professional development
  • Student/Family orientations (Sept. 9-11)

Phase 2: Sept. 16-Sept. 28

  • Remote instruction begins for Grades 3-12
  • High needs students begin in-person instruction
  • MEEP, kindergarten, grades 1, 2 and 6 begin hybrid

Phase 3: Sept. 28-Oct. 13

  • Grade 3 and MVTHS (12) students begin hybrid

Phase 4: Oct. 13-Oct. 26

  • Grades 4, 5, 7, 8 begin hybrid
  • MVTHS students (11 & 12) begin hybrid

Phase 5: Oct. 26-Nov. 16

  • Grade 9 begin hybrid and MVTHS students (11 & 12) continue

Phase 6: Nov. 16 (Second Quarter)

  • Grades 10, 11, 12 begin hybrid and MVTHS students (10-12) hybrid

Families will have the choice to keep their children learning remotely full time. High needs students will also be able to participate in full-time in-person learning.
