Medford Burger Restaurant Closes Its Doors

The location is no longer open after more than a decade of operation.

MEDFORD, MA — The city’s location of a nationwide burger chain closed its doors earlier this month.

The Smashburger at 495 Riverside Ave. is no longer in operation after more than a decade. The spot launched in December of 2015 after 16 months of planning. The restaurant stood on the northern side of Medford’s Wellington neighborhood as part of a large strip mall containing numerous food options, grocery stores, and retail businesses. It shared a building with two other eateries, as it was in between a Panera Bread and Panda Express.

According to the company, four Massachusetts locations remain in Boston, Westwood, Natick, and Attleboro. Medford was the third of these locations to launch, and now becomes the first to close. There are more than 220 Smashburger locations throughout the country in 30 different states.
Despite the Medford closure, the company is working on an expansion plan under the leadership of CEO Jim Sullivan, who was promoted to the role after being the president for more than a year. His predecessor Denise Nelsen left the company after less than one year.
