Superintendent: 'Beautiful' Service For Campbell

Roy Belson said musical performances were "magnificent" at a "community outpouring of human caring" for Medford native.

Medford Public Schools Superintendent Roy Belson said the funeral service for Krystle Campbell was "beautiful" with thoughtful comments by those who spoke.

The funeral for Campbell, who was killed in the April 15 bombing attacks at the Boston Marathon, was held Monday at St. Joseph's Church on High Street in Medford.

Hundreds lined up outside to gain entry but the church quickly filled up, and many did not get inside. Media were not allowed inside the church per a request from Campbell's family.

Belson said comments made by Father Chip Hines of St. Joseph's, as well as Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley, were "very well thought-out and very personal."

In summarizing some of Hines' remarks, Belson said Campbell was remembered as "joyful and smiling all the time." He added that O'Malley's words were "very focused and very comforting."

Belson said the musical performances inside the church were "magnificent," including those by the church's adult choir and famed Irish tenor Dr. Ronan Tynan. Tynan is perhaps best known from his many years of singing "God Bless America" at New York Yankees baseball games.

"The service was solemn but uplifting," Belson said. "It was a community outpouring of human caring."

Gov. Deval Patrick, Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray, U.S. Sen. Mo Cowan and U.S. Rep. Edward Markey attended the funeral, as did state Attorney General Martha Coakley, Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian and state Sen. Patricia Jehlen, according to Belson.
