Week in Review: The Stanley Cup, A New Carroll's, Inside Medford PD

Medford's week in review. Monday, Oct. 17 to Friday, Oct. 21, 2011.

Here's some of the top stories from around Medford this week:

A Medford classic has plans to be re-born. Carroll's was once a diner on Main Street, just south of Medford Square. Now there are plans for a new Carroll's at 21 Main St. The family-owned and operated business is in the early stages of demolition work inside the new location, where Il Faro restaurant once was, and hopes to open before Christmas, Owner Maury Carroll said. "We think it will be something special," Carroll said. "We know the Square is getting rejuvenated and we’re pleased to be a piece of the puzzle."

Dale Hamilton-Powers is loyal to the Bruins, having worked for the franchise for 42 years. She proved equally loyal to her Medford roots by bringing the Stanley Cup to LoConte Rink Thursday. The Bruins Director of Administration, Hamilton-Powers grew up in the Hillside and stayed in Medford until moving to Falmouth in 1989. When it came time to plan out her day with the Cup, there was never any question it would spend some time in Medford, she said. "I grew up in Medford," she said. "It was just a given I would bring it back here."

The Medford Police Department headquarters on Main Street was built in 1962 and it has been outdated for years, according to Police Chief Leo Sacco. Sacco led all seven city councilors on a tour of the building Tuesday night, taking them through evidence storage rooms ruined by flood and a broken gun range. He showed them black mold on ceilings, unusable holding cells, and asbestos falling from boiler pipes nearly 50 years old. The building needs to be replaced, Sacco said. "There was a time when I thought repairs would be enough - Not anymore," he said.

Abdul Jabar Mohamed, 28 was arraigned in his hospital bed Wednesday and ordered held on $100,000 bail on charges that he caused an early morning fire that caused over $4 million damages in Roxbury Monday, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said in a press release.
