Lt. Gov.: Learn About the Earned Income Tax Credit

Submitted by Lt. Gov. Tim Murray's Office.

On Jan. 27, communities across the country, including here in Massachusetts, celebrated Earned Income Tax Credit Day. Since its implementation, the Earned Income Tax Credit has helped lift millions of Americans above the poverty line and has had a high participation rate relative to other programs for low-income families.  However, there are still many Massachusetts residents who do not realize that they qualify for the program or do not know how to claim the credit.

That is why, Governor Patrick declared Jan. 27 ‘Massachusetts Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day.’ This resource is critical now more than ever, as Massachusetts families can use some extra money in their pocket to support every day needs for their households.  The Earned Income Tax Credit is a great program for low and moderate income residents, who depending on their family’s size and income, may be eligible for thousands of dollars in refunds, even if they don’t currently owe any income taxes.

Over the years, the Patrick-Murray Administration and partnering organizations have visited tax assistance sites in cities and towns across the Commonwealth. These sites, known as VITA sites, provide free tax assistance to help residents apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit and other available tax resources. Around this time of year, I encourage you to visit a VITA site in your own community to take advantage of the available resources you have earned.

Yours truly,
Timothy P. Murray
Lieutenant Governor
