MELROSE, MA — Melrose is on track to have a new City Council president next month following a council vote Monday.

Jen Grigoraitis won unanimous support from fellow councilors at a non-binding City Council caucus. She was the only candidate nominated for the position.

Grigoraitis joined the council in 2020 as part of a wave of new councilors elected in November, 2019. She served as council president in her first term, chosen via a split vote over colleague John Tramontozzi, who also sought the presidency.

Cinella announced this fall he would not be seeking a third year as president. Grigoraitis, in kind, announced she would seek the role.

Grigoraitis represents Melrose’s Ward 6. She thanked council colleagues for their support in a statement on social media on Tuesday, extending an "extra thank you" to Cinella for his service.

"I am honored to again serve as Council President for 2023," Grigoraitis said. "Lots of work to do in the new year, and we will be ready."

With its caucus now complete, the City Council will still need to formally elect its president at an organizational meeting on Jan. 3.
