Return To Sender: Melrose Receiving Fraudulent Imposter Invoices
Fraudulent invoices are being sent to businesses and individuals throughout the city in an attempt to steal money.
MELROSE, MA — City Hall and the police department are warning residents against a scam currently targeting local businesses that poses a significant financial risk.
Fraudulent invoices that reportedly appear to be from the city are being sent to Melrose businesses and individuals that have pending business with the city upcoming. The invoices are requesting wire transfer payments of up to $5,000.
City leadership emphasized that it did not and would not send invoices with that specific request.
“The City of Melrose does not solicit or accept wire transfers from residents or license/permit applicants, and all bank accounts for the City are maintained at institutions located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” City Hall said in a statement.
Recipients of any invoice are being asked to contact City Hall so it can verify its authenticity.
