Masks, Face Coverings Mandatory In Melrose Businesses

People without face coverings in businesses will be asked to leave and subject to fines.

MELROSE, MA — Anyone in a store, restaurant or some other public places in the city will be required to wear a mask or face covering or risk being fined. The Melrose Board of Health approved the measure Thursday night.

The order also goes for anyone entering any building open to the public; using any public transportation, taxis or ride-share service; pumping gas or using other outdoor self-service facilities; or are in any confined or enclosed facility where the public or workers have access.

The mandate will go into effect Saturday for everyone over the age of 5.

The order does not extend to people engaging in passive recreation or driving their own vehicles, though people are still advised to wear face coverings during such times.

Anyone without a mask will get a warning on their first offense and are subject to a $50 fine on a second offense, $100 fine on a third offense and $300 fines on fourth and subsequent offenses. Police officers may be called upon to enforce the order.

Businesses will be required to tell any offender to leave the store if they do not comply.

Any business and workplace that is still allowing customers and offers essential services must put up a sign letting people know face coverings are required.

Delivery drivers and people who run food out for curbside pick-up must also wear a face covering and gloves.

Melrose has ordered some 20,000 masks that were set to arrive by Saturday at the earliest. The city currently has a limited supply of paper masks available.

Health Director Ruth Clay said only people 60 and older with an underlying health condition and no access to a face covering should contact Melrose Helps for a mask.
