Mayor Looking For Melrose Historic District Commission Volunteers

The ideal candidate should have a passion for Melrose and architectural details, and the ability to voice opinions during public meetings.

MELROSE, MA – Mayor Paul Brodeur is currently looking for Melrose residents to volunteer in the Melrose Historic District Commission.

The Melrose Historic District Commission reviews all proposed architectural changes in the downtown historic district, making sure to preserve and protect the distinctive and significant characteristics of buildings and places, and encourages new designs compatible with existing buildings in the district.

Commissioners review proposed changes to buildings, as well as signs, fences, walls, light fixtures, or similar exterior changes that are visible publicly.

The ideal candidate for the position will have a passion for Melrose and architectural details, critical thinking skills, and the ability to voice opinions during public meetings, the Mayor’s office said in a news release.

Building projects such as construction, reconstruction, demolition, and removal of architectural features may be reviewed by commissioners.

The commission consists of seven members including experts in the fields of architecture, law, real estate, and history, residents of the Melrose Historic District, and other residents who are interested in the built environment of the downtown district. The HDC is supported by the City of Melrose Office of Planning and Community Development.

Commission meetings take place in person at City Hall on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. as needed.
