MBTA Youth Passes Expanded to Melrose: Reports

Melrose is now one of 17 communities eligible to opt into the program.

MELROSE, MA - Melrose's young commuters may now be able to access the T at cheaper rates if the city opts into the monthly Youth Pass pilot program.

The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority board voted Monday to offer its monthly Youth Pass pilot program to 17 communities, expanding on the four communities for which it was already available to, reports Boston.com and WBUR. The board additionally voted to offer the pass to passengers between the ages of 12 and 25, as it was previously offered to passengers as old as 21.

According to the MBTA website, the pass will be offered in the core cities of Melrose, Somerville, Arlington, Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Lynn, Malden, Medford, Milton, Newton, Quincy, Revere and Watertown.

Passes are available to 12-to-18-year-olds not enrolled in middle or high school, as well as 19-25-year-olds who are eligible if they are enrolled in a GED or job training program, or if they pass low-income standards.

The passes will cost $30 after the new fare hikes take effect on July 1, a significant discount from the $84.50 monthly subway pass after the July 1 fare hikes, according to the reports. Passes will be available for purchase on Sept. 1 at fare vending machines.
