MELROSE, MA — The city’s Veterans Advisory Board is teaming up with the Bedford branch of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for a suicide prevention training on Thursday, March 27.

The event is slated to take place at Melrose High School on the Lynn Fells Parkway at 7 p.m. The Bedford Veterans Affairs Suicide Prevention Team will emphasize the S.A.V.E. Approach, which stands for ““Signs of suicidal thinking,” “Ask the question,” “Validate the Veterans’ experience,” and “Encourage treatment and expedite getting help.”

According to the city, suicide is the second-leading cause of death for Veterans aged 45 and younger. There are more than 600 Veterans who reside in Melrose.
