Melrose Library Project Gets $2M Boost From Trustees
Half of the estimated cost of the renovation project is now accounted for.

MELROSE, MA — The Melrose Board of Library Trustees will commit $2 million toward the renovation of the library, giving the city half of the $20 million it estimates the major project will need.
The board unanimously decided Wednesday evening on the money for the historic building.
Melrose this month was selected for an $8 million state grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The city must secure the rest of the funding for the project by January in order to get the grant.

The city said it will ask City Council to authorize a bond for the balance of the $20 million.
"I am just thrilled at this clear statement of support from the Trustees," Library Director Linda Gardener said. "They understand the importance of this project, both to protect our beautiful historic building and to move forward in offering 21st century access and services."

The 117-year-old library presents major accessibility and safety problems.
If the funds are secured, construction would last for some 18 months. The library would move to a temporary location during that time.
"I am so grateful to the Trustees for their strong commitment to this project as well as their keen financial stewardship throughout the years," Mayor Paul Brodeur said. "It shows a dedication to Melrose and is an important step forward in our financial plan for the library and all of our capital projects, which I look forward to presenting to the community very soon."
