Melrose Voters Shoot Down Property Tax Override

Melrose also elected several new officials Tuesday in the race for school committee, alderman and alderman-at-large.

Voters who took to the polls Tuesday shot down Melrose Mayor Robert Dolan’s proposed Proposition 2 1/2 property tax override. 61.1% of Melrosians voted “No” on the ballot question. Only 36.7% voted “Yes,” according to Tuesday’s unofficial vote count.

In addition to the standard 2.5 percent property tax increase, Dolan’s proposed override would have imposed a tax increase of $2.25 million. Funds generated by the override would have been used to create school positions and two new police officer jobs.

In the race for School Committee, Ed O’Connell and Lizbeth DeSelm earned seats. Incumbent Margaret Driscoll was re-elected to the committee.
