Melrose Wants Community Input In Flood Plain Zoning Effort
The city is looking to update its zoning for the first time in 15 years.

MELROSE, MA — The Office of Planning and Development is inviting the community to share their thoughts on proposed flood plain zoning amendments at a public hearing scheduled for Thursday, May 15.
The city’s current floodplain zoning regulations were last amended in 2010, and the purpose of this most recent update is so Melrose can comply with the National Flood Insurance Program’s minimum standards.
The amendment calls for adding new sections to outline the district's purpose, designate a floodplain administrator, and provide information on permit standards and disclaimers of liability and severity. It also includes updated references to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's map of panels and publication date of the Middlesex County flood insurance study to reflect the new maps.

By meeting the NFIP’s standards, property owners will have access to affordable flood insurance. The amendment must be finalized by Tuesday, July 8 to be in compliance.
