MelroseWakefield Hospital Breaks New Ground With Heart Procedure
The institution recently performed a successful leadless pacemaker implantation.

MELROSE, MA — MelroseWakefield Hospital recently became the first community hospital in the state to successfully implant a leadless atrial pacemaker.
The procedure was performed by electrophysiologist Dr. Jennifer Chee, who also works as the Director of the Ventricular Arrhythmia Program at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
According to Tufts Medicine, leadless pacemakers are smaller than a AAA battery and placed directly inside the heart through a minimally invasive surgery that requires a shorter recovery time compared to normal pacemakers. In addition, they have a lower chance of causing infection.
The operation was performed in the hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab.
