MELROSE, MA – Sam Hammar has announced her candidacy for Mayor of Melrose on Friday.

Hammar has worked as a public employee for nearly two decades, first as a Boston public high school teacher – “the best job I've ever had,” Hammar said – before working in economic development and currently in technology and employee services for the Commonwealth.

“I want to be able to be more helpful and in a more bold way,” said Hammar.

Within that vision is the school budget, improving senior services, expanding economic development opportunities, and rebuilding trust and engagement in city government.

“The mayor of the city is the CEO of the business. It's a management position,” Hammar said.
“Having worked with really inspiring leaders, I have felt and seen the difference when staff members are engaged in the process of the services that they provide, and I look forward to working with the folks in City Hall who have ideas and are experts in their field.”

In Melrose, Hammar has served on the Commission on Women, Chair of the Melrose Democratic City Committee, Candidate for Massachusetts State Senate, One Melrose override campaign, Melrose Together, Melrose Creative Alliance, Member of MMTV, Member of the Chamber of Commerce, Lincoln Elementary PTO Co-President, and co-Host of the weekly Let's Talk Melrose, Melrose show.

“I'm a bottom-up, grassroots person, I'm not a top down person,” Hammar said. “In order to make bold change, we need to have a bold leader.”
