Following a thorough examination process, the Stone Zoo recently received a prestigious accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The zoo’s president John Linehan announced the news in a letter earlier this week.
The rigorous accreditation process ensured the zoo met AZA’s standards for animal welfare, veterinary care, wildlife conservation, scientific research, education, expert staffing, and safety.

AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are leaders in the protection of endangered species. Highly-trained staff provide excellent care for more than 750,000 animals.
Of the 2,800 licensed animal exhibitors in the United States, fewer that 10 percent have AZA accreditation. The Stone Zoo is now among the select few.

“We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this achievement – the state Administration, legislators, the Zoo New England Board of Directors, the Zoo New England Advisory Council, the zoo staff, and you (area residents),” Linehan said. “We are deeply appreciative of all of your support and advocacy on behalf of this beloved institution.”
