MILFORD, MA — The only cannabis business in Milford will undergo a change, moving from one part of an industrial area closer to an affordable housing development.

Sira Naturals recently sought permission from the Milford Zoning Board of Appeals to decommission its medical marijuana treatment center at 13 Commercial Way and move it to another building nearby at 1 Industrial Way.

The new Industrial Way facility, however, would be located within a few feet of a new affordable housing development at 15 Birch St. Sira Naturals needed ZBA approval to open the treatment facility closer to housing than allowed under local zoning laws.

After the Milford Planning Board recommended approval of zoning variances, the ZBA voted on Thursday to approve the move. According to the Cannabis Control Commission, medical marijuana treatment centers serve multiple purposes.

"Previously known as Registered Marijuana Dispensaries, a Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MTC) is a vertically integrated business that cultivates, processes, and retails its own marijuana and marijuana products for medical use. MTCs also may deliver marijuana and marijuana products to Registered Qualifying Patients," the commission says on its website.

Milford has banned adult-use cannabis retail facilities, and does not allow cannabis deliveries to be made in town. Medical marijuana facilities cannot be banned under state law.
