Milford Mattress Dump Event Coming Up In May

Milford eliminated curbside mattress pickup in 2020, but the town will collect the hard-to-get-rid-of items at a special event.

MILFORD, MA — Milford residents will have an opportunity to get of old mattresses for cheap at an upcoming town event.

Milford no longer collects either mattresses or box springs at the curb — a change that happened in 2020 — but now has a mattress recycling program at the transfer station.

On May 7, the town will hold a special mattress collection event where residents get rid of the bulky items for $5. The cost to get rid of a mattress at the transfer station is typically $20.

The mattresses will be recycled, allowing different parts to be turned into new items, and keeping the items out of landfills.

"Approximately 85 percent of each mattress and box spring can be diverted from disposal. Recycling the wood, metal, foam and fabric components from mattresses allows for the materials to be made into a number of new products, such as carpet padding, particle board, and industrial filters," the Board of Health said in a news release.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Milford Highway Department, 30 Front Street. The $5 fee can only be accepted via check, no cash allowed.
