MILFORD, MA — A small stream in Milford will get an overhaul as new funding comes in.

A total of $600,000 in funding has been allocated for flood mitigation and climate resilience work at the Godfrey Brook subwatershed, according to a news release from the Charles River Watershed Association. The stream, which flows through densely developed parts of Milford, has become prone to flooding during heavy rains over the decades.

The CRWA and the town secured the grant from the Healey-Driscoll Administration. It will fund a multi-year effort to study and address flooding and water quality challenges along the Godfrey Brook, along with the Hospital and Obrien Brooks.

To do so, CRWA will look at its existing brook conditions and come up with nature-based solutions, like wetland restoration, floodplain reconnection and stream daylighting.

“Godfrey Brook has been overlooked for too long, even though it runs right through the heart of Milford and affects so many people,” said Emily Norton, Executive Director of CWRA. “This funding gives us the chance to not just fix flooding problems, but to reimagine the brook as something healthier and more valuable for the community.”
