K9 Axel Tracks Down Breaking and Entering Suspect

Axel was able to sniff out the suspect's trail six hours after the crime occurred, police said.

NATICK, MA - The Natick police department’s star K9, Axel, and his trusty sidekick Officer Mabardy tracked down a breaking and entering suspect when they were supposed to be sitting at home in their pajamas.

The pair were off duty at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning when they got a call about a case of breaking and entering in a neighboring community, police said.

The crime happened at about 3 a.m. but even though it was six hours later Axel and Officer Mabardy were hot on the culprit’s trail, police said.

Axel picked up a scent at the scene of the crime and pulled Officer Mabardy through the neighborhood to the rear door of a house and to a shed behind that home, according to police.

Detectives found the male suspect in the house, police said. The suspect confessed to breaking and entering, police said.

Police found the crowbar used to pry open the door in the shed that Axel had tracked to, police said.

Axel started training with the police force in 2013. His name is a Scandinavian and Germanic word of Hebrew origin meaning “father of peace.”
