Superintendent Memo
Dear Natick Community:
The week has been filled with highs and lows -- I thought I'd write about it in case any of you can relate. We started with our hearts heavy thinking of people across the globe in the Ukraine who are suffering and fighting for the most fundamental of human rights: safety. I have seen many teachers struggling to explain events to students all week. Below, our library/media staff across the district share some of the teaching happening at all levels. Our thoughts are with them and if you have connections to this country, we are thinking of you, too. My Ukrainian neighbor is beside himself with worry... it seems unreal.
But those events were mixed with the joy of seeing our children's faces again in all of our schools. As Principal Ghilani at Ben-Hem stated, "we saw lots of smiling and the sticking out of tongues at circle time...and it felt so good." What felt even better was the consistent ethic of care and dialogue I saw among our student body and in their interactions with teachers. I am sure stating this will bring people to write to me about the exceptions, but what I saw and heard about on the whole was our student body -- even little learners -- having discussions about how to ask about and respond to varying comfort levels on de-masking. I saw students ask probing questions and listen. I saw teachers guiding the kids. The fact that this happened so often and so kindly is a win for our community. It means parents had dialogues at home and guidance was given about family expectations and how to then live in the community with varying expectations. Our children really modeled the kind of community care I know we all want them to exercise. I am really proud of all of us and thank you as parents.
I wonder, if, like me, though, you are seeing hard and less empathetic adult commentary and behavior in our community pages and email. Adults are also struggling with all of the world events, stresses of the pandemic, and the recent inflation and constant churn of change. There is a rawness to interactions that I think is hurting our collective healing, but may very well be normal rage associated with the grieving of losses.
We also contended with the racial and ethnic slurs at our high school which harms us all and continues the grieving cycle anew. We continue to investigate with our police partners and will not tolerate acts of hatred.
Today, Rasheedah Clayton, METCO Director and Influence 100 Superintendent Intern, and I attended a METCO strategic planning meeting where we were educated by Carney Sandoe Associates on diversification in hiring (photo above). This was held at Gillette Stadium and was supported by the Kraft Philanthropic Foundation. Many of our colleagues are struggling with hiring and the constant churn of it right now. All of us want diverse, capable leadership and teaching candidates but have much work to do in our culture to create a community of belonging--where all people can be their true expression of themselves and we attract diverse stakeholders to our community. I met Scituate METCO director, Darryl David today who said part of the "key to creating communities where all stakeholders feel they belong is shifting the idea that school culture is a business model vs. a love model. Shift to a love model and everyone succeeds." I needed to hear that today. He's right. Look at how our kids modeled the love model this week --and they made the week a beautiful one. We need to transfer that over and over in our community to new and varied situations.
To this end, to work on our model and belonging, the School Committee will be holding a listening session on culture, holidays and homework in the near future (see below) and Ms. Clayton and I will be holding Belonging Talks with our LGBTQ+ students and allies and our BIPOC students and allies to hear from them about their experiences and how we can help all people feel seen and included within our community. This is part of our work in the Profile of a Graduate and in cultivating our civic dispositions. Our teacher and student development work and training is designed to address this need.
Election season also just provides an extra layer of tension to any year and this year is no exception. School staff do not get involved in these matters and cannot, we support anyone brave enough to want to be on School Committee these days and work with anyone who arrives to serve the Natick community.
I wish you a nice weekend and I do hope the signs of spring indicative of it being here to stay!
Enjoy your weekend.

Holding Named Memorial Principal
New principal starts July 1
On Thursday, March 10, Superintendent Nolin shared the following memo with Memorial Elementary staff, parents, and caregivers. We're excited to welcome Mr. Holding to our community! You can read the full press release on our website.
Dear Memorial family,
I’m pleased to inform you that we’ve selected the next leader for Memorial Elementary School. After a process that saw incredible, diverse candidates and great stakeholder engagement from our community, I’m excited to introduce you to Mr. Troy Holding. Mr. Holding begins his new role on July 1, and we hope you’ll join us in welcoming him to our Natick community and back home to Massachusetts with open arms.
There was a huge overlap of agreement between staff, parents, and administrators on choosing Mr. Holding for this role. As I stated in a press release (link), “His leadership as an experienced principal in diversity, equity, and inclusion in a variety of school settings make him the epitome of our Profile of a Natick Educator.” You made it clear to our search committee what your priorities were and Mr. Holding brings those qualities and more to this role. In performing our due diligence as part of this process, it was clear when speaking with those Mr. Holding has worked for and with throughout his career: he creates warm, personalized, and lasting relationships with families and students that creates a culture of belonging and school pride.
PARENT HOMEWORK: PANORAMA SCHOOL SURVEY
Please Complete the Survey ASAP
Natick Public Schools has partnered with Panorama Education to survey families about experiences and perceptions at your child’s school. These surveys arrived via email on February 9. Please note that this year, you are able to complete a survey for each child in your household. Responses remain completely confidential, which means no one at the school sees your individual responses. The results of this survey help school administrators better understand the perceptions of families at each school. Survey data will be used by administrators to identify strengths and areas for growth.

FYI: STUDENTS IN OTHER DISTRICTS TARGETED BY SOCIAL MEDIA THREATS
In recent days, you may have seen news stories warning parents and caregivers of a threat targeted at students via social media. The threat claims compromising photos will be sent out if money isn’t received. These fake social media accounts are posing as teenagers and following students whose profiles are public.
While a threat such as this hasn't been reported in Natick, please discuss social media awareness with your child and make sure they're only speaking with people they know (in real life) online and can confirm they know them. If anyone reaches out who they do not know, they should disengage. If they are targeted by this scam, you or your child can contact police or a trusted adult.
